Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota provides affordable day care for infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers as well as an after-school and summer care programs for school-aged children through grade 5, Monday through Friday. Do you have Christian education for children and youth? Yes. Sunday school is offered during the school year (September-May) on Sundays at 10 a.m. for children ages 3 through grade 6. Rotation Sunday school allows students to experience each lesson in different ways – such as science, crafts, storytelling, cooking and games. These are intended for those youth wanting to become professing members.Confirmation classes are available for those in grades 7-9. These are intended for those youth wanting to become professing members.8. When does your youth group meet? Youth on Fire, our group for youth in grades 6-12, meets on Wednesday nights during the school year from 6:30-8 p.m.9. What difference do you make in the community? Community outreach is definitely encouraged at Southern Hills! Our Motto is Making Disciples and Making a Difference! Community outreach opportunities included:•Serving the Night Watch Canteen, a ministry of United Methodist churches who unite to provide meals to needy families in downtown Sioux Falls every Sunday evening.•Participating in Samaritan’s Feet, a Sioux Falls ministry that literally puts shoes and socks on thousands of Sioux Falls school children every year.10. What outreach ministries do you offer beyond the community?•Supporting Tree of Life and Rosebud reservation ministries. Our youth and Sunday school children serve social service agencies around the city and state. For instance, in early 2016, we provided a trailer load of supplies for both the White Buffalo Calf Women’s Shelter and Tree of Life Ministry in Mission, SD. Other community service includes serving the St. Francis House, Feeding South Dakota and Furniture Mission.•Every year, we assemble several hundred health kits that are used in disaster-relief around the world.11. Are there classes/activities for adults? Yes. A variety of classes and activities are available including:•Men gather for breakfast at 6:45 a.m. on Wednesdays at Fryn’ Pan at 10th and Cleveland.•Adults enjoy an occasional short-term studies and small groups. “Making Sense of the Bible” and “A Disciple’s Path” are two recent studies.•Ladies Bible Study group meets at the church on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. to study various topics from women in the Bible, heaven and angels, to the current study of the Life of Jesus.12. Are you the church that has the Living Nativity each December? Yes. Southern Hills enjoys sharing the Good News of Jesus’ birth through a Living Nativity with live animals and people portraying Mary, Joseph, the wisemen and shepherds. You are invited to come inside to warm up with hot chocolate and cider and eat a few (or a dozen) cookies. Check the website for the date scheduled this year! We would love to see you!13. What children’s activities do you have for Easter? Breakfast with the Easter Bunny is a fun activity for children! Activities include games and prizes, crafts, light breakfast, puppet show, pictures with the Easter bunny and a huge Easter egg hunt organized by age group.
